Around 60% of English words come from Latin! Learning Latin helps you learn those tougher English words and understand the sometimes tricky rules of grammar.
For example, the Latin word for "hello" is "Salve". We get words in English like "salutations", "salute" and "salutatorian" that all have meanings related to greetings.
Science, Medicine, Law
Latin is still used in the science, medical and law fields. For example, the symbol for Gold on the Periodic Table of Elements is "Au" which comes from the Latin word for gold, aurum.
In law and government, veto means the same in Latin and English. To veto a bill means to disapprove and reject it.
Learn Latin to Learn Other Languages
Latin is also the parent language of a group of languages called "Romance Languages". Not called Romance languages because they make people fall in love, but because they developed from the Romans who lived all over Europe.
These languages are Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Latin will give you a strong head start on learning any of these Romance languages.
Culture
One of the most exciting parts of learning a language, is learning about the culture of the people who spoke it. In this case, the Ancient Romans. In our Latin classes that means learning about mythology, the Roman Empire, the Roman houses, food, clothing, constellations and more!
